Pharmacovigilance
centre

The Pharmacovigilance Centre, University of Kelaniya was established to support national Adverse Event (AE) surveillance within the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU), Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya. As an independent PV centre, it will generate unbiased reports for local and global stakeholders on medicines safety.

The Pharmacovigilance Centre University of Kelaniya envisions a safe and effective pharmaceutical landscape for all Sri Lankans.

Mission

To protect the health and safety of the public by collecting, analyzing, and communicating information on the safety of medicines.

Objectives

The Pharmacovigilance Centre improve the public safety and safe use of medicines by,

Improve public health though enhanced safety reporting of medicines.

Reduce unnecessary healthcare costs associated with AEs.

Support effective medicines regulation.

Promote rational use of medicine.

Early detection of unknown AEs and mapping of AE trends.

Promote understanding, education, and clinical training in pharmacovigilance.

Create awareness of pharmacovigilance and AEs among all stakeholder.

Ensure reliable and timely exchange of information on safety issues.

Functions and Services of PV Centre

Establish pharmacovigilance system in Sri Lanka for AE reporting.

Collect AE data and maintain data base on reported AE.

Identify and analyze the new signal from the reported AE.

Support effective medicines regulation.

Communicate the safety information on use of medicines to healthcare professionals and public to minimize the risk.
